Open Letter: End Greyhound Racing at Wentworth Park
Australia’s leading animal protection organisations have united to urge the NSW Premier, Minister for Racing, and Minister for Lands and Property to end greyhound racing at Wentworth Park.
To Premier Minns, Minister Kamper (Minister for Lands and Property) & Minister Harris (Minister for Gaming and Racing),
We, the undersigned, are calling for an end to greyhound racing at Wentworth Park, and for this precious public land to be returned to the community.
Wentworth Park is Crown land, held in trust for public benefit. Yet it remains dominated by greyhound racing and gambling, offering little value to the local community. Greyhound racing serves only a small group, profiting from the suffering of dogs, while gambling causes widespread harm within communities. The current lease is set to expire in 2027, creating a crucial opportunity to reimagine this rare parcel of inner-city land for a better future.
We are concerned that the NSW Government may be holding discussions with Greyhound Racing NSW about extending their lease, while the voices of local residents and community groups are not being heard. Public land must be managed transparently and in the public interest.
Wentworth Park could become a vibrant precinct that benefits the broader community. It could support sport, recreation, green space, events and/or services that benefit thousands.
Instead, it continues to host an industry linked to animal cruelty and public gambling harm:
In 2024 alone, five greyhounds died on track at Wentworth Park and over 390 greyhounds were injured at Wentworth Park*.
So far in 2025, 13 dogs have died on NSW tracks and more than two dozen have died after suffering serious racing injuries. More than 3,400 injuries have been recorded, by far the highest total in Australia.*
This suffering is ongoing, despite years of promised reform. It has no place in a modern city like Sydney.
We urge the NSW Government to:
Reject any extension of the greyhound racing lease beyond 2027; and
Restore this Crown land for peaceful, community-focused public benefit by implementing the ‘Community Vision for Wentworth Park’. The Community Vision was developed following extensive community consultation and reflects the clear aspirations of local residents.
Wentworth Park belongs to the people. It’s time to give it back.
Signed,
