Keeping animal welfare on the political agenda

As the dust settles on the 2025 Federal Election, one thing is clear: the movement for animals is gaining momentum and political advocacy is playing a significant role in that shift.

In our recent post-election webinar, Alliance Co-Founders Dr Bidda Jones AM and Dr Jed Goodfellow unpacked the election results, celebrated key policy wins, and discussed how the Alliance for Animals is ensuring that animals remain firmly on the political agenda.

Building a strong foundation through pre-election political engagement.

Before a single vote was cast, our team had already been hard at work. We:

  • Identified vital policy reforms that would improve the lives of animals nationwide

  • Engaged with parties and candidates across key electorates

  • Maintained consistent contact to determine where they stood on critical animal welfare issues

  • Secured election commitments for these six reforms.

This groundwork enabled us to assess party commitments and prepare our public-facing campaign.

Election scorecard campaigns inform voters and pressure politicians.

At the centre of our election efforts was our Federal Election Scorecard campaign, which showed where parties and candidates stood on six vital animal welfare issues. To maximise visibility, we ran a coordinated social media advertising campaign alongside our core members.

The campaign not only helped voters make informed choices, it also increased pressure on parties and candidates to consider animal welfare and share their formal stance on key issues.

A short scorecard showing where the major political parties stand on animal welfare policy asks.

The results in target seats.

Of the 18 key electorates we targeted, 13 were won by candidates and parties who were supportive of stronger animal welfare policies – a promising step forward. These results reflect a growing public demand for action on animal issues and validate our approach of strategic targeting and policy engagement.

A table outlining the electorates we targeted and the outcome. Thirteen electorates have ticks, four have crosses and one has a question mark, as the votes are being recounted.

Turning promises into action.

With a supportive Government re-elected, we can shift our focus to:

  • Holding elected representatives to their commitments

  • Sustained advocacy to ensure animal welfare reforms are implemented, not shelved

  • Ongoing pressure and collaboration with political leaders, policy makers, allies and the public.
