Australian Animal Welfare Strategy consultation explained: How to have your say

Join our free webinar and have your say on the renewed Australian Animal Welfare Strategy

The Australian Government has released the final consultation draft of the renewed Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS). This is our last opportunity to help shape it before it is finalised.

The strategy is intended to provide a national framework for improving animal welfare across Australia, covering:

  • Animals in farming and production

  • Animals in research and testing

  • Animals in work, sport, and recreation

  • Animals in the wild

  • Aquatic animals

  • Companion animals.

After years of advocacy and consultation, the latest draft includes some important progress. It now recognises that animals are sentient beings whose lives matter beyond the benefits they provide to people.

But there is still work to do to ensure the strategy provides a meaningful foundation for improving the lives of animals.

That's where you come in.

Join the Australian Alliance for Animals for an online webinar where we'll:

  • Explain the background to the renewed AAWS: What it is, why it matters and how it could shape the future of animal welfare in Australia.

  • Share our assessment of the latest draft: What the Alliance has advocated for, what's improved and where stronger commitments are still needed.

  • Help you have your say: Walk you through our new submission-writing tool, which makes it easier to prepare personalised feedback on the areas of the strategy you care about most.

  • Answer your questions: Help you feel confident contributing to the consultation.

Your voice matters

The Australian Government is accepting feedback on the draft strategy until 5 pm AEDT on Friday 13 November 2026.

This is the only round of full public consultation on the draft AAWS. Your feedback can help demonstrate that Australians want a national strategy that puts animal welfare at the centre of decision-making.

You don't need to be a policy expert or have written a government submission before. We'll guide you through the process and provide the tools you need to participate.

Together, we can call for a stronger national approach to protecting animals.
