Support for Motions to Disallow Winding Back of Northern Summer Live Sheep Export Ban

The Australian Alliance for Animals supports the motions introduced by Mr Andrew Wilkie MP and Senator Mehreen Faruqi this week to disallow regulations introduced by the former Coalition Government that would see the ban on exporting sheep into the Middle Eastern summer rolled back.

The best available science demonstrates that sheep experience considerable heat stress when sent into these conditions during the period of May to October, causing extreme suffering as a result of elevated core temperatures, increased respiration, and open mouth panting.

The Northern summer trade ban should therefore be extended to cover this entire period in line with the recommendations of the 2019 Heat Stress Risk Assessment Review.

We call upon the Albanese Government to follow these recommendations to better protect the welfare of Australian sheep while the trade is phased out.
