Building on momentum for animal welfare: The Alliance for Animals welcomes returning Government and new Parliament

The Australian Alliance for Animals congratulates the returning Albanese Labor Government and all elected members of the 2025 Federal Parliament.

Alliance for Animals Co-Founder Dr Bidda Jones said the Alliance was looking forward to working with the re-elected Government and new Parliament to build on recent progress in animal welfare reform.

“This election outcome reaffirms the public’s desire for compassionate, forward-looking policies—and that includes stronger protections for animals,” Dr Jones said.

In the lead-up to the election, the Alliance launched a public scorecard campaign to help Australians understand where parties and candidates stood on six vital animal welfare reforms:

  • Protecting the legislated phase out of live sheep exports

  • Establishing a National Animal Welfare Commission

  • Providing funding for the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy

  • Expanding Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status to support animal welfare advocacy

  • Promoting animal welfare in trade policy

  • Expanding the trophy hunting import ban

“During the campaign, we saw encouraging signs that animal welfare is being taken more seriously by political leaders and candidates from across the spectrum.”

Dr Jones said the Australian Labor Party showed welcome leadership by either fully or partially supporting all six reforms.

“With these commitments, the Government is well-placed to deliver meaningful change for millions of animals in the next term of Parliament,” she said.

“We know the majority of Australians support an independent, evidence-based and humane approach to animal welfare policy, which is what these reforms represent.”

“The Alliance looks forward to continuing its work with the Albanese Government and all members of the new Parliament to ensure these commitments are implemented in full and that Australia leads the way in protecting animals,” Dr Jones said.
