Last stand for independence in animal welfare

Labor delivered the Office of Animal Welfare – but the Bill falls short on independence.

The NSW Government listened and introduced its Office of Animal Welfare Bill. Now we need to make sure the Office is truly independent.

Under the proposed legislation:

  • The Office would be under the “control and direction” of the Agriculture Minister. It could only use key powers when the Minister asks in writing.

  • The Bill removes the Animal Welfare Advisory Council, reducing independent expert-based advice to government.

We have until 20 November to call on Labor to fix it.

Please join us in calling on the Premier to strengthen the Bill and pass it this term, so NSW gets a truly independent Office of Animal Welfare.

We’ve drafted a template for you, but it's always more effective if you write it yourself. Before sending, we encourage you to add a sentence or two about why animal welfare matters to you, or why you want to see stronger protections for animals in NSW.

Personal messages can have a greater impact on MPs, showing them that this issue matters to the people they represent.
