It’s time for Labor to deliver an Independent Office of Animal Welfare in NSW

NSW Labor promised to create a new Independent Office of Animal Welfare. More than three years later, that commitment is yet to be delivered.

Before the 2023 NSW election, Labor committed to creating a new Independent Office of Animal Welfare, a critical reform that could transform how animal welfare decisions are made in NSW.

The Government has since reaffirmed that commitment and said the Independent Office of Animal Welfare will be established this term.

However, with limited parliamentary sitting days left, Labor MPs only have until the end of November to help ensure the Government delivers the reform it promised.

Write to the Premier, Chris Minns, asking the NSW Government to deliver its promise and legislate the Independent Office of Animal Welfare without delay.

We’ve drafted a template for you, but it's always more effective if you write it yourself.

For too long, responsibility for animal welfare has sat within government departments that are also responsible for promoting animal-use industries.

A properly established Independent Office of Animal Welfare would:

✅ Prioritise animal welfare in the decision-making process

✅ Strengthen enforcement of animal protection laws

✅ Bring greater transparency and accountability
