With new leadership in Victoria, we have an important opportunity to call on the government to fulfil its promise to animals and the Victorian community. 

Victoria’s animal protection laws – the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTA) – are now 40 years old and among the oldest in the country. 

 POCTA no longer reflects modern animal welfare science or the community’s expectations for how animals should be treated. 

The Victorian Labor Government already acknowledged the need for change. It committed to modernising the state’s animal protection laws and replacing the outdated Act with a new Animal Care and Protection Bill.

But years have passed, and the Bill has still not been introduced. While the government fails to act, vulnerable animals are left to suffer. 

Even if you do not have a local Labor MP, you can still help build pressure for action.

By writing directly to the Minister for Agriculture, Michaela Settle, you can call on her to champion this reform within government and urge the new Premier Ben Carroll to introduce the Animal Care and Protection Bill without further delay.
